Anybody know of any documented research into movement induced ecstasis. Am wondering if there are any specific movements or ways of moving that are known to release endorphins. I have discovered bellydance over the last couple of years which has become like a spiritual personal practice and am curious about the effect of all this shimmying and accompanying vibrations throughout the body on a chemical level. The ancient practice of Shaking i find really amazing too, and also any serpentine like movements that engage the spine so if anyone has any interesting links, that may appease my curiousity. My experiences with yoga have given me some intuitive insights and as im interested in dance as therapy and as a sacred art, i would love some supportive western evidence if there is any for my ecstatic crusade.

"ELEVATE Film Festival 5 "All Tribes Unite" culminates on October 5th at Los Angeles' premiere arena, the 7000 seat state-of-the-art Nokia Theatre LA Live. In the way Cirque Du Soleil has radically redefined circus, Elevate is revolutionizing the experience of cinema. By merging cutting edge science and technology with movies, music and new media, ELEVATE will be a futuristic feast for the senses. During the event, sound wave and energy wave healers will be available to provide treatments to audience member to provide physical healing for the Festival. It is our attempt to provide an amazing new experience with a little something for everyone. With special guest bands and the premiere of music videos by APL of the Black Eye Peas and 3 time Grammy winning Artist Kev Mo the music and the energy is not to be missed!!

The theme for ELEVATE is "All Tribes Unite!" We will bring together leaders and elders of native and indigenous people and give their ancient wisdom a voice through modern technology. Our goal is to ignite the deep connection we inherently feel with one another and our precious planet.

The main event is the world premiere of more than twenty short films produced exclusively for this night. Emerging and professional filmmakers from around the world are given assignments to be completed within seven days. The films cover bold and timely subjects, impacting the major forms of media: commercials, music videos, documentaries, scripted dramas and comedies. The filmmakers join us live in Los Angeles for the world premiere of their projects.

For the grand finale we will launch the first annual Elevate Award Show to honor celebrity philanthropists for doing their part to Elevate our people and our planet.

Now a new Study: Antidepressants Work No Better Than Placebos for the vast majority of depressed people.
http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document&doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0050045

The drug makers have been out right lying about the efficacy of antidepressants. They have been caught red handed.

For the majority of people, the drugs are no better then snake oil.

If the only problem was that, the drug is a placebo for the vast majority people who have been given it, I would not care.

But it is far from the only problem!

The Physicians' Desk Reference lists the following adverse reactions (side effects) to antidepressants among a host of other physical and neuropsychiatric effects: manic reaction (mania, e.g. kleptomania, pyromania, dipsomania), emotional lability (or instability), abnormal thinking, alcohol abuse, hallucinations, hostility, lack of emotion, paranoid reaction, amnesia, confusion, agitation, delirum, delusions, hysteria, psychosis, sleep disorders, abnormal dreams, and discontinuation (withdrawal) syndrome. Adverse reactions are especially likely when starting or discontinuing the drug, increasing or lowering the dose or when switching from one SSRI to another SSRI. Adverse reactions are often diagnosed as bipolar disorder when the symptoms could be entirely iatrogenic (treatment induced). Withdrawal, especially abrupt withdrawal, from any of these medications can also cause severe neuropsychiatric and physical symptoms. It is important to withdraw extremely slowly from these drugs, usually over a period of a year or more, under the supervision of a qualified and experienced specialist.

In addition to the adverse reactions listed in the Physicians' Desk Reference, the FDA published a Public Health Advisory on March 22, 2004 which states (in part): "Anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), hypomania, and mania have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with antidepressants for major depressive disorder as well as for other indications, both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric."

The vast majority of school and other recent massacres have involved people going on or coming off these drugs.

Many otherwise loving parents have killed their own children wile going on or coming off these drugs.

This website is a collection of 2100+ news stories with the full media article available,
www.ssristories.com

I have personally witnessed some who who became scary psychotic and violent wile in withdrawal. Someone who is normally highly, intelligent gentle, kind and loving. This is a person I dearly love.

For some people the often horrendous withdrawal effects last for years after quitting.

Withdrawal effects such as Suicidal thoughts, Suicide attempts, Homicidal thoughts or urges, Chest pain, racing heart, Auditory hallucinations, Visual hallucinations, Disequilibrium, Serious Headache, Numbness, burning, Electric zap-like sensations in the brain, Electric shock-like sensations in the body, Abnormal visual sensations, Spasms in the eyes, Loud ringing or other noises in the ears, Abnormal smells or tastes, Drooling, Slurred speech, Blurred vision, Muscle cramps, stiffness, twitches and much more. Most people describe it as hell.

Frequency of withdrawal reactions
Antidepressant______halflife_______Frequency of withdrawal reactions

Effexor____________5 hours_____________78%
Paxil_____________21 hours_____________66%
Zoloft____________26 hours_____________60%
Prozac___________4-6 days_____________14%

People can become completely incapacitated by SSRI withdrawal.
Reference: “The Antidepressant Solution” by Joseph Glenmullen, M.D.

Suicide, homicide, nightmare side effects all for a drug that is little more then snake oil for the majority of people.

You can have a snoop on the charities efforts at www.railwaychildren.org.uk

They are mainly a preventative charity which in terms of being a street child can mean the difference between a world of pain and heartache and a life worth living. Railway children endeavour to meet runaway children before pimps, pushers or abusers do. They are even getting to help the kids in Siberia who are living in the sewers.

80% of their money goes straight to the projects, 17% fundraising, 3% admin etc, so they are a 'fair-enough-trade' charity.

10p a search is phenomenal and it means that the average amount spent per child -£44- will take 440 searches...its fairly usual for me to search 20 items per evening, so that means in 22 evenings that ground level support for a child is reached. www.railwaychildren-friends.com/email.asp

There is a snag with the search page which is that on entering a search it automatically redirects to a normal search page for the results. So inorder that you keep raising money for the charity you have to go back to the root page with the picture of the child and the green bits for each new search subject to raise another all important 10p.

with Angela and Iain
at SF Citadel, in SOMA district of San Francisco
1277 Mission St at Ninth St
Thursday June 14th, 2007
doors 7:00, workshop 7:30 - 10:30 PM
$15 - $25, sliding scale
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EduKink
http://edukink.tribe.net
http://EduKink.org
http://SFCitadel.org

Most flogging is done in a downward direction. This is easiest, as gravity does the gathering for you. However, downward strokes avoid stimulating the sweet spot, so the bottom gets only endorphins, but not as much arousal. This playshop focuses on effectively flogging upward, into the sweet spot, and ways to solve the problems that arise, such as bounce, pocket, crowding, and scatter.

This is a third-level workshop. To get the most out of it, you would already be comfortable doing some (probably downward) two-flogger techniques. During the presentation, we will not repeat introductory flogging material. However, during the hands-on part, we'll work with each attendee at their current level. The class is aimed at advanced players, but may be suitable for some intermediates.

This is a hands-on playshop. It is best to bring two floggers of similar lengths. Falls of 16-22" are good for learning this. Flogger substitute equipment will be available if you don’t have your own.
Eye protection strongly recommended for tops.

By the end of this class, you should have more effective inverted strokes, and understand how to convert every downward stroke pattern into an upward pattern. We will teach inverted three-beat weave to all those who are ready for it.

The evening has four parts (times approximate):
7 - 7:30 Brown Bag Munch
7:30 - 8:00 Presentation and Demos
8:00 - 9:30 Guided Hands-on Double Flogging practice
9:30 - 10:30 Open practice.

Paideia (“pie DAY ah”) is a Greek word meaning “learning through play”. Paideia evenings are more than regular workshops. First we socialize. You may bring your dinner or snacks to eat during the munch period. Then we see demos. Then we do the guided hands-on workshop. You’ll mainly work in pairs learning and refining your skills. Then during the open practice period, you may integrate your new skills with other play techniques. Or you may do more practice, or watch the variety of techniques that others practice.

Partners: You can practice solo, e.g. on a pillow, or in pairs. It’s better to prearrange a lab partner, rather than try to pair up during the munch period. If you want to find a suitable partner in advance, we recommend you join and post on http://edukink.tribe.net

Reservations not required. Membership not required. You don't need to wear anything special. The event is open to anyone 18 years and older with a sincere, positive, personal interest in BDSM / leather / kink. All roles, genders, and orientations welcome. If you have questions you may write to edukink at yahoo dot com

- -

Angela and Iain are officers in the Society of Janus, Dungeon Monitors for SF Citadel and elsewhere, and teach BDSM classes at all levels, at many venues. Their teaching style combines humor and approachability with clarity and thorough research.

- -

What attendees have said:

"It's a whole new world of flogging."

"Doing the impossible today."

“Paideia offers an amazing array of play styles. I’m really extending my range.”

“A class, a mini-party, and a munch. The best way to spend a Thursday. I come every month, no matter what the topic.”

- -

“Sweet Spot - Double Inverted Flogging” is part of the Paideia series of monthly BDSM/leather events / playshops mainly for those of intermediate or advanced experience. The format intends to combine the best elements of hands-on workshops, a munch, a play party, and a peer workshop. More than twenty topics are covered in these playshops, on both common and exotic topics. We have a core study group who increase the depth and breadth of their play each month, as well as have fun together.

What is happenning while floating From the medical point of view the Central Nervous System at the level of the hypothalamic, pituitary and brain stem regions, experience a dramatic restriction of external stimuli in Floatation. The reticular formation and its reticular activating system, that normally trigger the activation of the cerebral cortex, sub-cortical regions, and the hypothalamic/pituitary axis are defuse, allowing the reticular inhibitory system to take over.
This triggers the relaxation response even further by inhibiting the release of Corticotrophin Releasing Factor, ACTH, and stops the stimulation of the autonomic nervous system via the sympathetic nerves to the adrenal medullae. This in turn inhibits the release of the neuro-transmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine, that are associated with distress, with the fight and flight response and its consequent muscular tension and anxiety.
What happens at the level of the body's phvsiology
Due to the inactivation of the sympathetic nervous system experienced during deep relaxation, we find numerous physiological changes that normalise the inner homeostatic mechanisms. The electrocardiogram shows a decrease in the heart rate. There is a decrease and normalisation of the breathe rate, the EEG shows a slowing down of the electrical activity of the brain generating alpha and theta waves that are associated with deep states of relaxation. The electromyography shows a decrease of the electrical activity of the muscles that is associated with a release of muscular tension and a better blood flow at this level.
There is a decrease in the consumption of oxygen associated with the decrease of the metabolic rate. There is a decrease in the production of lactic acid and an increase of its elimination from the system. Since lactic acid is associated with muscular pain and anxiety the patient in the Floatation therapy is able to overcome these two common symptoms.
The levels of encephalon produced in the brain and released into the brain stem and spine is a very important aspect of the relaxation response. Recent research studying the characteristics of these encephalons has shown that the molecular structure is very similar to morphine and therefore the name of endorphins has been given to them. Their main characteristics are the ability to be natural painkillers in the organism by blocking the recept9rs in the synaptic neurones for the transmission of pain. They also produce a sense of well being and euphoria without any side effects.

In the last couple of months I have been able to slowly return to a more regular exercise pattern (*normal* for me is at least an hour/day, 365 days/year).

Needless to say I started feeling better from the increased activity and wanted to celebrate. So during an image search on endorphins I stumbled across this site: http://www.painandwellness.com/pain_management.html the best information I've found in a relentless 2 year search for answers about and relief from chronic pain.
It also explains to me why *some* people feel and act the way they do.
I don't know the technical physiology involved but I appreciate that there is definitely a difference quality-wise between a "fight or flight" rush and what I would call an "endorphin" rush.
I don't usually feel "good" after a fight or flight response - like almost getting (or getting) in a car accident like I do after getting flogged or pierced.
A soccer match seems to combine the adrenaline of competition and stress with the high of exercise- an endorphin release.
I think I was mistaken to put "chocolate" and "sex" as favorite ways of getting an endorphin fix (in my introduction thread post) because i'm not sure if either of these two experiences actually release just endorphins - is that true? I think an orgasm is a combination of different neuro-chemical response, n'est-ce pas?

Imagine, if you will, a rectangular piece of metal tubing, about 8 feet by 4 feet. It hangs vertically from a beam in the ceiling by two chains, attached to the frame by eyebolts. It looks sort of like the little triangle kids used to play in music class. . . except, of course, that it’s rectangular.

Now imagine two young women with red hair on it. Naked except for their heels, facing each other, tied to the rectangle itself and to each other. Face to face, boobies to boobies, belly to belly, wrists cuffed to the metal tubing. Now imagine a very handsome, but very sadistic Dom, swinging it and twirling the rectangle with them on it until they howled with fright! LOL!

Yes, at Threshold when we say we played on the swing, we don’t mean the kind you see in kids’ playgrounds. Those wickedly creative minds at Threshold created the swing in the Big Room for bondage and play.

On Saturday night, my Dom tied my friend, Red, and me to it, wrapping the rope around us like it was a spider web, until we were so well supported we could relax into the bondage and didn’t even have to hold on. He swung it softly, gently, at first, then started pushing us higher. He began spanking me with every push, which made me squeal with delight. He tickled Red mercilessly, focusing on her newly pierced nipples, just for the hell of it. She looks soooo cute when she laughs like that. It makes me want to tickle her toes!

As we began to attain some height with our swings, the chain overhead started making scary settling noises. That drives Red crazy, even though she knows in her head it’s pretty safe. Actually, one of our construction volunteers had told me the noise was just due to some extra chain or something, not any structural unsoundness. He even offered to fix it for us, but my Dom caught wind of it first, and forbade him to do it. LOL! He loves hearing Red scream too much to give it up! Fortunately for me, it inspires less fear and more anticipation, since it always reminds me of the sound a roller coaster makes, as the chain pulls the cars up the first really big hill before the steep downside over the top.

Red is also frightened when my Dom grabs the bottom of the swing - where our feet are - and holds it above his head, so that we are actually horizontal rather than vertical! It’s just another part of the theme park experience for me, but Red screams her head off! She says when she’s horizontal that way, she starts thinking about how if she fell, she wouldn’t be able to get her hands out under her to break her fall. Then we laugh, because we are tied up and couldn’t get our hands out, and because we’d crash just as hard if we fell while the swing was vertical and we were standing up straight. LOL!

Then came the portion of the scene where my Dom likes to wind rope around the middle of the swing, then pull it away quickly, making the swing spin like a top! Yeah, well, one spin is my limit. It’s amazing how seriously people take you when you threaten to throw up! LOL! So my Dom took me down, reinforced Red’s ropes, and then proceeded to spin her round and round, first one way, then the other. During this part, she laughs instead of screams. All this is going on while I’m sitting close by in a big leather chair, commenting softly to myself about how the room tilts whenever I close my eyes. :-D

Thus ended the first scene of the evening.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah one time - I was like 12 at the time - I was in a Judo tournament in Colombia, and the last person I went up against did some sloppy technique and when we landed I fractured my fifth metacarpal (sub-pinky bone) on the right hand... I stood up, almost seeing double, noticing my pinky was thicker than my thumb.... heard some people cheering for me to get on with it... then became so enraged I rushed the guy, heaved him up in the air and slammed him down for a win!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

technically, though... hmmm..

I don't think that testosterone and adrenalin qualify as endorphins, and actually they have opposite actions (norepinephrine activates the sympathetic nervous system, while endorphin slows down heart rate, respiration, and general metabolism). Still, being in that "fight or flight" state sure seems to have a way of quashing pain in a similar way to opiates that bind to endorphin receptors...

Does anyone know if there is some interaction between the two, or if there is some other mechanism in effect with which catecholamines (especially norepinephrine) provide pain relief?

Food for thought...
